What were your resolutions for 2017?
Did you promise to be more patient? To make more time for what truly matters?
Did you make good on those resolutions?
At the end of every year, we look back on the events of the last 12 months and assess our progress in life. We measure our successes and our failures — every day gets a score; each event is given a value. Did we accomplish everything we set out to? Did we make the people around us proud? Did we make ourselves proud?
There’s so much pressure placed on individual years. We give ourselves 365 days to make the changes we envision when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. It’s hard to remember that New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are just like any other days. There’s no threshold separating one year from the next. Just time. We have the same amount of time between now and tomorrow as we do between 2017 and 2018. A day separates both.
So this year, maybe give those resolutions for 2018 a rest. Instead, resolve to do your best — to be your best — today. Every day, when you wake up, resolve to be better than you were the day before. To be kinder, more giving, more loving, more welcoming. Resolve to make one more step toward becoming the person you are capable of being.
We only have time. We’d like to think that each year gives us a blank slate, but that’s not true. We get that every minute. Every hour. Every day. Because the only thing separating us from who we really can be is time. And a whole lot of little steps forward.
