Empowering People with IDD Through Assistive Technology

By Randy Kiser, Community Living, Inc., Senior Business Development Manager

Assistive technology (AT) is truly changing lives for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It opens exciting new opportunities for independence, self-expression, and connecting with the community. Whether it’s simple visual support or advanced communication devices, AT is there to help individuals achieve their full potential and enjoy a more active, engaged life in society.

Some wonderful examples of assistive technology are picture schedules, visual timers, noise-canceling headphones, adapted utensils, and speech-generating devices. Additionally, many apps and smart devices come with customizable features that can really help with everyday routines, staying organized, and connecting socially.

The most effective way to utilize AT begins with focusing on the person and genuinely getting to know everyone’s unique strengths, challenges, and hopes. When families, educators, job coaches, and support professionals team up, they can select the best tools that truly enhance quality of life, resulting in more meaningful and positive outcomes.

As technology continues to grow and improve, it has created even more wonderful opportunities for everyone to be included. When we embrace assistive technology, we help people with IDD live more independently and allow them to participate fully in all aspects of life.
