How Teamwork, Artificial Intelligence, and Assistive Technology Came Together to Solve a Workplace Challenge

Sometimes, a simple workplace challenge can lead to an innovative solution when teamwork, artificial intelligence (AI), and assistive technology (AT) come together.

Kevin is a bright, thoughtful man with an intellectual disability who works at a local supermarket. His responsibilities include various janitorial duties, such as collecting and disposing of trash. One task was challenging: tying trash bags closed before disposal. Because of limited manual dexterity, Kevin struggled to tie the bags independently and relied on a job coach or coworker for help.

When Kevin’s case manager recognized this challenge, it became an opportunity for collaborative problem-solving. The team discussed possible solutions and turned to artificial intelligence to help identify a practical tool. A simple AI inquiry suggested a device that seals the gathered ends of bags with tape, potentially eliminating the need to tie them by hand.

With a promising solution identified, the team located and purchased the device for testing. The process was straightforward: gather the open end of the trash bag, insert it into the device’s slot, and allow the mechanism to secure it with tape. Initial testing showed the device worked effectively and might give Kevin a more accessible way to complete the task.

The next step was the real test. Kevin’s case manager brought the device to his workplace, where Kevin could try it himself. The results were a tremendous success! Kevin used the device to close trash bags, reducing his reliance on others to complete this part of his job.

Today, Kevin has another tool available to him, which he can choose to use when completing his workplace responsibilities. What was once a barrier to independence became an opportunity to build confidence and greater self-sufficiency.

The lesson goes beyond closing a trash bag. This success shows how teamwork, AI, and assistive technology can complement one another to solve everyday challenges. The case manager identified the need, the team collaborated on possible solutions, AI helped locate an appropriate technology, and hands-on testing determined whether the device would work for Kevin.

Most importantly, Kevin remained at the center of the process. Technology did not replace human judgment, teamwork, or personal choice. Instead, it helped the team discover a simple, practical solution that supported Kevin’s independence and success at work.

Sometimes, meaningful innovation isn’t about complicated technology. It’s about people working together, asking the right questions, and finding the right tool to make a difference.
